Famicity.com
A Private Family Social Network
November 20, 2018 By Amie Tennant

A little like Facebook, Famicity, offers an easy-to-use social sharing platform—but in a more personal and secure way. When one family member opens a free account on Famicity and invites other family members to join, you create a private family network where you all can have fun sharing pictures and stories.
One unique feature of Famicity is that, once you sign up for the free service, you can download your family tree, photos, and memories from FamilySearch.org and then lock them down on Famicity for “by invitation only” access. Because Famicity is free of unwanted ads and posts, you can also feel safe allowing your whole family to participate, including the younger children. Many people use the FamilySearch Memories app to preserve family photos and share photos of their deceased ancestors. Once you connect a photo to a deceased ancestor on the FamilySearch Family Tree, the photo can be seen by other FamilySearch users. Famicity allows you
to upload and share family photos in a private, secure network. Many users have said they are using the Famicity platform as a sort of hub for their family to stay connected by sharing current photos and stories. Famicity allows families to have completely private interactions without the risk of having personal photos exposed as they may be on traditional social media outlets. Sign Up for a Free Account at Famicity.com
Visit Famicity, and click Register in the top right corner. You can sign up using your FamilySearch account, an email and password, or a Facebook account. Remember, if you want to be able to import your family tree and photos from FamilySearch.org, you need to register for Famicity using your FamilySearch account information.

STRANGE BUT TRUE...

Heroic Ghost Saves Entire Family
an old article published in an 1893 New Mexico newspaper titled “Saved by a Ghost.”

Picture
This was a ghost story with a decidedly nice twist in that the ghost in question came to the rescue of an entire family up in St. Lawrence County, New York. Although I usually conjure up images of ghosts as veiled in wispy white, this ghost is described as “a tall, heavily built man clad in furs to his chin, his fur cap pulled down over his ears, his head bowed, with both hands outstretched…” You really must read this story since, after all, the author says: “This story is a true one.”

DIGGING UP THE PAST...

Picture
By Sue Shellenbarger
Updated Jan. 15, 2013 9:33 p.m.

Amateur genealogists, beware! Researching your ancestry doesn't always turn up heroes and royalty. It may turn up a felon, a bigamist or another unsavory character.
New York filmmaker Heather Quinlan found more than a few skeletons when digging into her ancestors' closet. Among them: Thomas Fagan, her grandmother's great-grandfather, who had killed a man during a drunken bar fight in 1868 (reportedly hitting him over the head with a chair in self-defense)....

When a Genealogy Hobby Digs Up Unwanted Secrets Some One in Five Find Unsavory Ancestors; How 'Sausage King' Got Rid of Wife

...Fans of 80s teen comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off know that Abe Froman was the Sausage King of Chicago. However, before Froman took the throne there was the original Sausage King of Chicago – Adolph Luetgert (December 27, 1845 – July 7, 1899), but this one was considerably less funny.
Old Adolph emigrated from Germany to Chicago, Illinois in the 1860s where he made a killing in the sausage business. Unfortunately, Adolph’s killing wasn’t confined to the business arena – he also likely butchered his second wife, Louisa Bicknese, and attempted to dispose of her in one of his sausage vats at the A.L. Luetgert Sausage & Packing Co. in 1897. His plan hit a snag when police discovered the body in a sausage vat. A persistent legend has it that Adolph actually ground his wife of 21 years into sausage and sold the meat to unsuspecting customers.
Born in the town of Gütersloh, Adolph was the third-born of the eleven Luetgert children, including his twin, Fritz (Adolph was obviously the evil twin). After leaving school and home at age 14, Adolph became an apprentice tanner. At 19, he struck out to London to seek his fame and fortune. After an unsuccessful six month stint here, Adolph set sail for New York like so many of his fellow countrymen, chasing success in the land of opportunity.
He made his way from the Big Apple to the Windy City where he began to ply his trade as a tanner. After saving up, Adolph started his own business in 1872. He was originally in liquor, but started his sausage business in 1879, which is where he would make his name. His first marriage, to Caroline Roepke in around 1871, ended in 1877 (her death) and resulted in two children. He was married to Louise two months later and the couple would eventually have a further four children....
