DNA Explained Part II – Dan Earl

Picture
The family history guy
Our returning speaker from DNA 101
Dan is an entertaining yet informative speaker.
One you sure won't want to miss!

So you just got your DNA test results back. Now what? Maybe you're not as Irish as you thought, and where is that Native American DNA you grandma always talked about?

This lecture will discuss what to do now that you have your results such as how to interpret ethnicity estimates, how to look at cousin matching, and DNA circles, as well as how to use a chromosome browser. Downloading and upload raw DNA data is also discussed.

If you have your results and are wondering what to do next, this is the class for you! Bring a friend, bring two! Light refreshments follow.

THIS MONTHS SPEAKER

A better Understanding of DNA through DNA Triangulation
Berta Schumacher

Picture
In April we learned 'How to find a relative through DNA or GENETIC triangulation' ...that is, finding two other people who fit into your DNA matches. Triangulation is a term derived from surveying to describe a method of determining the
Y-STR (male line) or mitochondrial (female line) DNA ancestral haplotype using two or more known data points.
Berta was a very informed speaker who helped us to understand a little bit better the way to find out how you are related using this three point method.
We will add in notes and screen shots from her lecture ASAP

FROM PREVIOUS MEETING
Diaries and Journals - Starting your Family Tree by Stacy Wells
Picture
In March Stacy discussed several ways to help us recall details of our life to help write our life story.  Various ways of listing memories were discussed as thought starters - personal favorites, hobbies, memories, schools, clubs and organizations, dates, work, vacations, family recipes, friends, pets, etc.

Write using notes, bullets or whatever style you are comfortable with.  Writing a life history can be done in a short amount of time.  The key is not to be concerned about perfection, neatness or being 100 percent accurate on the first attempt.  The information can be re-written and details added if you want.

Family photos add to the story.  So do maps, letters, postcards, etc. Stacy also shared several project ideas she has created to share family memories and mementos with future generations.  If you missed this meeting you missed a good one!

READING HEADSTONES
BY dONNA cARLEVATO

Picture
Picture
Remember the controversy we had a couple of years ago about using shaving cream to help read headstones?  This technique may only work on white marble, but I thought it was creative.

This is one of the photos I received from the Teysen family who just returned last week from France.  Their uncle is buried in the Rhone American Military Cemetery.  They used sand to fill in the engraved letters to better read the headstone.

Last year we got an inquiry from a man in France looking for the descendants of a pilot who was from St Charles, Michigan.  He had been shot down in WW II and buried in France.  I found that the pilot's sister had married a man named Teysen and they lived in Mackinaw City.  Her children were in France last week for the ceremony.

A desperate bid has been launched to track down devices which were a lifeline for British soldiers during the D-Day landings.

DIGGING UP THE PAST

Picture
By Sue Shellenbarger
Updated Jan. 15, 2013 9:33 p.m.
Amateur genealogists, beware! Researching your ancestry doesn't always turn up heroes and royalty. It may turn up a felon, a bigamist or another unsavory character.
New York filmmaker Heather Quinlan found more than a few skeletons when digging into her ancestors' closet. Among them: Thomas Fagan, her grandmother's great-grandfather, who had killed a man during a drunken bar fight in 1868 (reportedly hitting him over the head with a chair in self-defense)....

TOO FUNNY

Picture
Picture
Many, many years ago, when I was twenty-three,
I was married to a widow who was pretty as can be.
This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red.
My father fell in love with her, and soon they, too, were
wed.
This made my dad my son-in-law and really changed my very life, My daughter was my mother, cause she was my father's wife. To complicate the matter, even though it brought me joy, I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy.
My little baby then became a brother-in-law to Dad,
And so became my uncle, though it made me very sad.
For if he was my uncle, then that also made him brother
Of the widow's grown-up daughter, who, of course, was my stepmother.
Father's wife then had a son who kept him on the run,
And he became my grandchild, for he was my daughter's son.
My wife is now my mother's mother, and it makes me blue,
Because, although she is my wife, she's my grandmother, too.
Now if my wife is my grandmother, then I'm her grandchild,
And every time I think of it, it nearly drives me wild,
For now I have become the strangest case you ever saw,
As husband of my grandmother, I am my own
grandpa!

Finding Lisa: A Real-Life Murder/Mystery/Genealogy Story

From the Blog by Dick Eastman · May 15, 2017

A fascinating story by Shelley Murphy, published in the Boston Globe, seems to be almost too strange to be true. Sadly, it is not only true, but pieces of the whole story are still missing. Dozens of law enforcement officers around the country, social workers, investigators from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, genealogists, and others have worked together to find as much information about a serial killer as possible. There may be even more information waiting to be found. Law enforcement officials feel there may be even more victims than are known so far.
