Nancy Julia Hascall Krohn

10/17/1923 - 10/1/2019 Ann Arbor, Michigan

Nancy Julia Hascall was born 17 October 1923 in Marquette Michigan to Carleton Chandler Hascall and Margaret Sherman. She passed away on October 1, 2019 in Ann Arbor, MI.

Nancy received her Bachelor of Science degree (one of only 3 in her class) in Nursing from the University of Michigan. She married Dr. Lawrence H. Krohn on 6 May 1946. Nancy was engaged with and loved by a variety of communities throughout her life. She was a member of the Sarah Caswell Angell Chapter of the D.A.R.. She gave many years to volunteer work with the Girl Scouts of America, and singing with the choir at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. She promoted genealogy work in the county through the Genealogical Society of Washtenaw County, (GSWC) becoming Editor of the quarterly Family History Capers, in 1983, continuing for more than 30 years. She had high standards for this publication, and spent many hours planning, preparing and transcribing material on poll lists, schools, naturalization records and cemeteries working with the Editorial Committee.

She and Mary Liskow edited the 1856-1864 Washtenaw County Atlas complete with index. She was a member of the GSWC Board of Directors for many years and taught several classes at GSWC general meetings. She was one of the delegates to the Michigan Genealogical Council beginning in 1996, and was given the prestigious Lucy Mary Kellogg Award by that group in 2010.

Another aspect of her genealogical work was the GSWC Research Committee, answering requests from people from all over the country with Washtenaw ancestors, always digging deep to supply answers. Her very special interests were her family, gardening and spending time in her camp in Ontario.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1991, her parents, two brothers. C.C. Hascall Jr. and John Sherman Hascall and two daughters Julie Louise Krohn (Bruce Cully- Port Angeles WA) and Susan Margaret Krohn. Surviving are daughter Sara Teresa Krohn of Holyoke, MA, Grandson Michael L. Wynn (Renee Kasperek-Wynn) of Ann Arbor, Granddaughter Chelsea Krohn Cully of Fayetteville, AR, and a great grandson, Michael C. Wynn A memorial service will be held on April 18, 2020 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Ann Arbor.

In lieu of flowers:
donations may be made to the Genealogical Society of Washtenaw County, PO Box 7155, Ann Arbor, MI 48107-7155; St. Andrews Episcopal Church 306 N. Division St., Ann Arbor, MI 48104; or the Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan, 1150 Beal Ave., Ann Arbor, MI 48109.

FOOD AND FAMILY HISTORY

OLD RECIPE FAVORITES

You might not have considered food as being connected to family history, but it is!  Good food has a way of bringing families together.  And anytime families gather, even if to JUST EAT --
That's when Family History is made!

What is the difference between a pierogi and a piroshki?
A pierogi is (in north america) a square- or crescent-shaped dumpling of unleavened dough, stuffed with sauerkraut, cheese, mashed potatoes, cabbage, onion, meat, or any combination of these, or with a fruit filling while piroshki is small bread pastries filled with finely chopped meat, vegetables or fruit either baked or fried.

SO TODAY WE ARE MAKING PIROSHKI !

PIROSHKI: meaning a poor mans dinner, is a very old family recipe that came through the women in our family from Ukraine to Russia to America. My grandmother taught it to me when I was very little, she said we always had to wear a babushka on our heads, for luck when we cooked. And that the secret ingredient in the recipe was ...the 'three sisters'.

THE STEPS THE GUARDS PERFORM HAVE SPECIFIC MEANING.
Everything the guards do is a series of 21, which alludes to the 21-gun salute. According to TombGuard.org:
The Sentinel does not execute an about face, rather they stop on the 21st step, then turn and face the Tomb for 21 seconds. They then turn to face back down the mat, change the weapon to the outside shoulder, mentally count off 21 seconds, then step off for another 21 step walk down the mat. They face the Tomb at each end of the 21 step walk for 21 seconds. The Sentinel then repeats this over and over until the Guard Change ceremony begins.

The second biggest change to our website – the search box in the top right corner of every page, the ability to narrow search results, the option to add comments and tags to digital objects – are all features of our host’s upgrades. As we began to incorporate these new features, we also took the opportunity to change the structure of the website as well. These changes are meant to enable our staff to handle most of the web development work necessary to maintain and expand the website.

AMAZING STORY

DON'T MISS IT!

Picture
Historical Novelist, Karen Schutte, speaker at Saginaw Chapter Germans from Russia Meeting

The public is invited to hear award winning historical novelist, Karen Schutte, speak about how she wove her true family facts into fascinating novels about German immigrants and their hardships, sorrows, and joys from leaving their homeland to settling in America. Her work was recognized by the receiving the 2013 Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers PEN Award.

Karen richly details the life of her great grandparents in rural Wyoming in her first of 5 novels, titled The Ticket. She follows the saga with 3 more novels, Seed of the Volga, Flesh on the Bone, where the family spends a brief time in Michigan, and Tank Commander. In her latest book, German Yankee, Karen switches gears and weaves a story about a Prussian Cavalry soldier who escapes to American only to fight in the Civil War. A sequel, Long Grass, is expected in 2020.

Karen states, “as a writer of historical novels I share with my readers what I know (family stories), what I have learned (Historical research), and fill in the cracks with what I imagine.”

Born and educated in Wyoming, Karen Wamhoff Schutte was raised on a farm in Emblem, WY, and graduated with a BS in Design/Marketing from University of Wyoming. She and husband, Mike, are parents of four sons and 10 grandchildren. They reside in Windsor, CO.

Plan to attend, hear and meet this author of exciting adventures of immigrant life on Sunday, October 27, at 2 pm in the lower level of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 808 Weiss Street, Saginaw, Michigan. Call President Jim Harris, 989-395-5684 or membership Carol Niederquell, (989) 799-4266 for more information.

              MEMORIES
       Days fly by quickly,
       And children move on.

                                      Before you know it,
                                      The old timers are gone.

       But as we look back,
       At generations gone by,

                                      We reflect on the memories,
                                      That serves as a tie.

       Binding us together,
       With future and past,

                                        And building a story,
                                       That forever will last.
