THE SEARCH CONTINUES!
SPEAKER-
Ann Clynick
We welcome the 'Continuing Search for English Ancestors', presented by Ann Clynick. Ann has given us a previous class on a beginning search for our ancestors in England, but this is a more in-depth look at what she has found. Ann is a native to England and immigrated here to the United States many years ago. If you have ancestors that hail from merry ole England she is the person you need to meet! Ann has been involved with Genealogy Research for over 40 years. She has taught several times at the Lansing Genealogy Conference. And is very knowledgeable on English documents and how to find them. COME SEE WHAT SHE HAS FOUND

What is the traditional New Year meal?
According to Southern traditions, you will have good luck for the entire year if you have the traditional New Year's Day supper. That means a of greens, 'hoppin' John', black-eyed peas, cornbread, and 'pot likker' soup. Here are our favorite New Year's recipes.

But in the North we have BEEF STROGANOFF

STRANGE BUT TRUE
Picture
When Alice Collins Plebuch decided to do a DNA test, she did it all in good fun. As originally reported by the Washington Post, the woman, who identified as Irish American, was shocked to find a mix of European Jewish, Middle Eastern, and Eastern European genes in her results. After family-wide DNA testing, she learned that her father was not the biological son of her grandparents. After even more digging, Plebuch finally got to the bottom of the story: Her father had been sent home with the wrong family. A mystery of over 100 years had been solved by a mail-in DNA test.

Bug fixes are still being made on  http://michiganology.org website.
Picture
Michiganology is going to be the Archives of Michigan go-to place for digital content. Non digital content, such as county and subject guides, will move to the Michigan.gov/mhc website.

The 1944 death certificate images are in the process of being uploaded.  The date search function will NOT find records on the last date entered in the search box. It is important to remember to include a range of dates when searching.

Example: Looking for a 5 January 1932 death certificate.
Enter: 4 January 1932 -6 January 1932 for dates.

WWII Memorial - helps to search

Picture
The World War II Memorial honors the 16 million who served in the armed forces of the U.S., the more than 400,000 who died, and all who supported the war effort from home. Symbolic of the defining event of the 20th Century, the memorial is a monument to the spirit, sacrifice, and commitment of the American people. The Second World War is the only 20th Century event commemorated on the National Mall’s central axis.

The second biggest change to our website – the search box in the top right corner of every page, the ability to narrow search results, the option to add comments and tags to digital objects – are all features of our host’s upgrades. As we began to incorporate these new features, we also took the opportunity to change the structure of the website as well. These changes are meant to enable our staff to handle most of the web development work necessary to maintain and expand the website.

Old Memories, New Traditions

NEW YEAR’S FOLKLORE

Some customs and beliefs are simply passed down through the ages. Here are some of our favorite age-old sayings and proverbs.
  • On New Year’s Eve, kiss the person you hope to keep kissing.
  • If New Year’s Eve night wind blow south, It betokeneth warmth and growth.
  • For abundance in the new year, fill your pockets and cupboards today.
  • If the old year goes out like a lion, the new year will come in like a lamb.
  • Begin the new year square with every man. [i.e., pay your debts!] –Robert B. Thomas, founder of The Old Farmer’s Almanac
The tradition of eating 12 grapes at midnight comes from Spain. Revelers stuff their mouths with 12 grapes in the final moments of the year—one grape for every chime of the clock! In the southern US, black-eyed peas and pork foretell good fortune.
