FOOD AND FAMILY HISTORY

MID-WINTER RECIPE FAVORITES

Recipes from our families connect us to our history and they
have a way of bringing families together.  And anytime families gather, even if to JUST EAT -- That's when Family History is made!
Picture
CHICKEN CHILI
This is a recipe you’ll want to be making year round, even as it starts to
get warm outside. It’s probably different than what you’d expect with the label of “chili” in the title but it is amazingly delicious!
You’ll love the way the flavors of this chili blend together, those tender pieces of chicken and that creamy broth. It tastes far different from the classic chili but it’s a welcome change. Everyone loves this soup!
And it’s just that much better when you load on the toppings. Who
wouldn’t love the addition of fresh avocado slices, crunchy tortilla chips, flavorful cheese and fresh cilantro? Bring on those toppings!

STRANGE BUT TRUE
Picture
SO ARE YE A REDHEAD?
Contrary to what many people assume, redheads did not originate in Scandinavia, Scotland or
Ireland, but in central Asia. Their coloring is due to a mutation in the MC1R gene that fails to produce sun-protective, skin-darkening eumelanin and instead causes pale skin, freckles and red hair. Less than 2% of the world's population have red hair.  That's approximately 140 million people. Scotland boasts the highest percentage of natural redheads, with 13% (40% might carry the gene there) while Ireland comes in second with 10%.

THIS JUST IN....

Bug fixes are still being made on the
http://michiganology.org web
site.
Picture
Michiganology.org is going to be the Archives of Michigan go-to place for digital content. Non digital content, such as county and subject guides, will move to the Michigan.gov/mhc website.

The 1944 death certificate images are in the process of being uploaded.  The date search function will NOT find records on the last date entered in the search box. It is important to remember to include a range of dates when searching.

Example: Looking for a 5 January 1932 death certificate.
Enter: 4 January 1932 -6 January 1932 for dates.

THE FLAG OF IRELAND AND ITS MEANING
Picture
by Borgna Brunner

Rarely has a flag possessed such lasting relevance as that of the "Tricolour," the national flag of the Republic of Ireland. Its three equal stripes illustrate the Irish political landscape as accurately today as in 1848, the year the flag was first unfurled.
  • orange — standing for Irish Protestants
  • green — signifying Irish Catholics and the republican cause
  • white — representing the hope for peace between them

IRISH FARE...

Picture
Cabbage might be the family's least favorite part of St. Patrick's Day dinner, and there are probably a few people you know who give it a miss altogether. If you want to get everyone enjoying their sides, take a page out of the traditional Irish recipe book and try Colcannon instead!

MILITARY HISTORY & NEWS

Veteran Headstones

Picture
By Mike Sonnenberg
On the outskirts of Saginaw in the back of Oakwood Cemetery is the veterans section with a Civil War Monument surrounded by tombstones of the veterans that so proudly served in the military. You will notice one marker is cleaner than the rest of the markers. I don’t know who Ross F. Huffman is other than what is written on his marker and that he served in the infantry during World War II. His marker is in a restored state and cleaned compared to the surrounding headstones. My friend worked at the cemetery, and he told me that one of Mr. Hoffman’s relatives was researching their genealogy and family heritage when they discovered they were related to Mr. Hoffman. While visiting the cemetery, they painstakingly scrubbed and cleaned the tombstone. It stands out among the other markers but they deserve to be honored and remembered.

The second biggest change to our website – the search box in the top right corner of every page, the ability to narrow search results, the option to add comments and tags to digital objects – are all features of our host’s upgrades. As we began to incorporate these new features, we also took the opportunity to change the structure of the website as well. These changes are meant to enable our staff to handle most of the web development work necessary to maintain and expand the website.

St Patrick's History

With the day for green beer approaching fast, it’s high time you looked at the real St. Patrick’s Day history. This is a useful since most people who celebrate St. Patrick’s Day simply participate because it’s fun and easy, not necessarily because they know where it came from.

St. Patrick was born in 395 A.D. in Scotland of wealthy parents and later kidnapped at 16 to be put to work in the hills of Ireland tending sheep. Four years later, St. Patrick escaped and returned to Great Britain. But
St. Patrick had a dream once he reached Great Britain, which showed the Irish people begging him to come back to them. So he studied to become a Catholic priest and returned to Ireland in 433 A.D.

A Grave Interest...

By Joy Neighbors

I am a Tombstone Tourist: someone who loves to wander cemeteries. I find it akin to visiting a museum: an opportunity to enjoy rarely seen sculpture, intricate carvings, and amazing architecture, all in a tranquil outdoor setting. This blog is about cemetery culture, art, history, issues of death, and genealogy - subjects of current relevance. I usually find something that intrigues me and makes me want to dig deeper.
