RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS

On February 17 let yourself be inspired by Random Acts of Kindness Day to bring joy to the people you come across. The day encourages people to do good deeds, and celebrate the pay it forward mentality. It also reminds us that doing something kind for someone else can have a big impact not only on their day, but also on ours - being kind to others makes us happier, and makes us realize we need to be kinder to ourselves too. An act of kindness doesn't have to be a big gesture either, sometimes
the smallest act can have the biggest impact.
So, on Random Acts of Kindness Day, do kind things for others. It is easy, it is free, and it will put a smile on everyone’s face.

CENSUS NEWS!

Census Release

Nancy Battick, Special to the Fiddlehead Focus
This year genealogists will have something extra to be thankful for! In April 2022, the 1950 U.S. Census will be released by the National Archives and Records Administration!!! HURRAY!
Many genealogists have been waiting for this for a while now as they trace their families through time. The 1950 census was taken post World War II and will begin recording the postwar baby boom. Many of us will show up enumerated for the first time making our debuts so to speak.
There are three parts to the 1950 census, the population census, the Indian Reservation Schedule of Natives living on reservations, and population forms for Canton, Johnston, Midway and Wake Islands. Included in the population census was the continental United States, the territories of Alaska, Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Panama Canal Zone, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. BUT THERE IS A PROBLEM
Unfortunately, it is unlikely that the release will be indexed.....

UNCLE SAM ISNT LOOKING FOR EVERYONE
Picture
I never hear military members complain about the 99.5% of the population that does not serve in the military. Why is that? I sometimes hear them complain about an aging fleet or back-to-back deployments or diminishing benefits or my persistent desire to go out to dinner. Yet I never hear people in the military wish that everyone else would serve.
That puzzles me. Because that "less than one percent" number gets trotted out every time someone mentions Joining Forces. I hear "less than one percent" and feel guilty about dodging the recruiter at the mall. I hear "less than one percent" and feel compelled to bake a pie for some nice Marine. I don't bake the pie, but I feel like I should.
I am such a slacker. I know if it were my job to deploy all the time and wear that scratchy uniform and occasionally meet people who might shoot at me, I would be adamant about spreading that experience to the rest of the population.
So why don't our military folks insist on universal military service? WELL....CLICK BELOW TO LEARN MORE!

BUT SOME STATES ALSO CELEBRATE ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S BIRTHDAY

IN MANY PLACES ABRAHAM LINCOLN IS ALSO CELEBRATED ON PRESIDENTS DAY TOO
Picture
President Abraham Lincoln is remembered as the United State’s 16th President whose life was cut tragically short by assassination in 1865. Throughout his career, Lincoln made a name for himself as a man who used his political prowess and passion for social change to keep the Union from dismantling during a time that the country was divided by the Civil War, all while catalyzing the emancipation of slaves.

Lincoln’s legacy paved the way for progressive movements such as the Women’s Rights movement and the Civil Rights Movement. In a time where the topic of “politics” is often met with a furrowed brow and latent mistrust, Lincoln remains a figure in American history that encompassed honesty, integrity and strength for our nation.

Lincoln’s life and story has been immortalized in various texts, books and movies. However, there are some anecdotes and stories about the 16th President of the United States that don’t appear in textbooks or on-screen.

From his early days as a wrestler, to a serendipitous encounter with the brother of John Wilkes Booth’s brother, and even dabbling with the occult (no, Lincoln was not a vampire hunter), here are the top strange facts about Abraham Lincoln.

HISTORICAL, GENEALOGICAL & RESEARCH BOOKS

ENGLISH, IRISH, SCOTCH AND WELSH
Picture
From acclaimed author, Nathan Dylan Goodwin comes this exciting new genealogical crime mystery, featuring the redoubtable forensic genealogist, Morton Farrier. When Morton is called upon by Ray Mercer to investigate the 1911 disappearance of his great aunt, a housemaid working in a large Edwardian country house, he has no idea of the perilous journey into the past that he is about to make. Morton must use his not inconsiderable genealogical skills to solve the mystery of Mary Mercer’s disappearance, in the face of the dangers posed by those others who are determined to end his investigation at any cost. This is the second book in the Morton Farrier genealogical crime mystery series, although it can be enjoyed as a stand-alone story.

GOOD THINGS TO KNOW

Picture
Do you ever wonder what to say after someone passes away? Whether it's the mother of a close friend, the spouse of a coworker, a friend's sister, or someone's father, the right words are often hard to find. Don't let fear keep you from sending a comforting message. It's important to take the time to write something to show you care.
If you've ever felt at a loss for words following someone's passing, you're not alone. You know that the family and close friends of the deceased are hurting, and no matter what you say, that pain won't go away. However, also know that expressing our condolences is the right thing to do, and it needs to have comforting words that show your heartfelt sympathy.

VALENTINES DAY CELEBRATIONS AND CUSTOMS AROUND THE WORLD
Picture
A long time ago Valentine's Day used to be a Christian celebration, that was started as early as 496 AD to commemorate a martyr, later declared a saint called, you guessed it, Valentinus. How exactly this love day came to be as we know it today is not exactly clear, but we don't really care about the hows and whys and are happy to munch on heart-shaped chocolates on February the 14th each year.

Since this is a reasonably old celebration that has spread all over the world, each of the countries celebrating it has adapted the concept according to their cultures and mentality. If most of us associate Valentine's Day traditions with roses, chocolates and love letters, then in Wales, it's all about intricately carved wooden spoons and pampering your husbands in Japan. Not only traditions vary though, but the dates also. If we are accustomed to February the 14th, then other countries have their own idea on when should the love day be celebrated.

CLICK down below to check more of the weird traditions and Valentine's day facts from all over the world. Illustrated by a talented artist Maria Muravski, the trivia is not only interesting but also beautiful.

CONGRESSIONAL CEMETERIES
Picture
Public interest in cemetery visitation reached new levels in the mid-nineteenth century.  As Cathleen Breitkreutz notes in her developmental history of 'Congressional Cemetery', this increased attention can largely be attributed to the rural cemetery movement in America. The movement transformed cemeteries into destinations for those wishing to escape the city and enjoy nature and monuments in a cemetery setting.

Cemeteries such as Mount Auburn outside of Boston and Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia were specifically designed with this purpose in mind.  Although Congressional was formed well before the movement began, it still benefitted from the new perceptions of cemeteries that evolved during this period.

Instead of being viewed solely as final resting places, cemeteries such as Congressional earned mention in tourist guidebooks and became gathering places for weekend outings.

BACK IN THE DAY

Picture
The CCC in Michigan
Picture
On 2 May 1933, two hundred young men from Detroit and Hamtramck arrived at an isolated spot in the Hiawatha National Forest, west of Sault Ste. Marie. They set up tents and dubbed the area Camp Raco. Designated Company 667, the Detroiters had been outfitted, inoculated and briefly oriented at Camp Custer in Battle Creek before being shipped to the Upper Peninsula. Within months there were forty-one similar camps across northern Michigan housing nearly eight thousand young men. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) had come to Michigan.   The Civilian Conservation Corps was President Franklin Roosevelt's personal creation. As governor of New York, he had introduced a broad reforestation scheme using ten thousand men who were on public relief to plant trees in 1932. In his July 1932 Democratic Party presidential nomination acceptance speech, he had proposed employing a million men in forest work across the nation. CLICK BELOW TO READ MORE ABOUT IT

HOW TO WRITE AN OBITUARY

Picture
AS THE FAMILY HISTORIAN, or simply as a mortal human, you may find yourself presented with the difficult task of writing an obituary for a family member who has recently passed. If you are a genealogist, you know how valuable obituaries can be. They often contain far more detail than any other death record, sometimes providing information about the deceased person’s life that you would never learn from any other source. You can search through MyHeritage’s 102 newspaper collections to discover some fascinating obituaries from the U.S., Canada, and around the world. But how do you summarize an entire life in a few paragraphs? How do you write something that will honor the memory of your loved one and help others honor that memory?  First things first:
