SGS NEWS

THIS JUST IN

Picture
ATTENTION TO ALL SGS MEMBERS:
We as a society have been welcomed to the Ancestry Beta Group to help test a new product for Ancestry. It has to do with taking old or damaged photographs and with a click restoring them with little knowledge or expertise.
You will still have the original scan of the photo but now you can have a completely restored and/or colorized photo right before your eyes! Ancestry representative Randon Morford, showed us this new technology at our last meeting and it was simply amazing!
If you are a SGS member and would like to be in this new Beta group and you have an Ancestry membership:
1. Sign into your ANCESTRY TREE.
2. FIND THE NUMBERS (located at the end of your web address at the top of the page.)
3. COPY THE NUMBERS
4. SEND those numerical id numbers along with your name to: rmorford@ancestry.com
5. RANDON WILL THEN CONTACT YOU

Delegate News
Two pieces of news from Delegate meeting from the Michigan Genealogical Society.         1) Archives of Michigan and Library of Michigan (LM) are now fully open. Hours: Mon-Fri 10-5 Sat 10-4. Masks are Required.
(2) At the end of December 2021, Ancestry will no longer be available online through the LM. Will probably mean it will also not be available through the Wirt Library. Not sure about Newspapers.com and Fold3, which belong to Ancestry. MORE INFO TO FOLLOW

Classic Holiday Film Celebrates Its 75th Anniversary

Posted on December 2, 2021 by Jenny Ashcraft
In 1946, It’s a Wonderful Life debuted in theaters across the country. This iconic family Christmas film was based on the short story and booklet The Greatest Gift. Initial tickets sales were disappointing, and reviews mixed. Though it received five Academy Award nominations, it did not win any Oscars. The film did not even come close to breaking even. Years later, the movie lapsed into the public domain, which allowed it to be broadcast without royalty fees. Television audiences rediscovered the film, and its popularity grew. It’s a Wonderful Life is now considered one of the greatest films of all time. It is No. 1 on the American Film Institute’s list of most inspirational movies. In 1990, the Library of Congress added it to the National Film Registry.

THE BOOK NOOK
HISTORICAL, GENEALOGICAL & RESEARCH BOOKS

THE JOURNEY TAKERS
by Leslie Albrecht Huber
Picture
Leslie Albrecht Huber's ancestors were journey takers, leaving their homes in Germany, Sweden, and England behind to sail to the United States and start new lives here.
Huber sets out to trace these journeys and to understand her family - who they were and what mattered to them.
As she follows in their footsteps, walking the paths they walked and looking over the land they farmed, she finds herself on a journey she hadn't expected.

Based on thousands of hours of research, Huber recreates the immigration experience in a way that captures both its sweeping historical breadth and its intimately personal consequences.

Stories Behind the Great Traditions of Christmas
by Ace Collins
Picture
Picture
The cheer of a crackling hearth fire. Colorful cards from friends and loved ones. An evergreen tree festooned with ornaments. The golden traditions of Christmas—gifts, wreaths, stockings, carols, mistletoe, and more—infuse our celebration of the season with meaning and glowing memories. And, in ways you may not realize, they point us to the birth of Christ. Stories Behind the Great Traditions of Christmas reveals the people, places, and events that shaped the best-loved customs of this merriest of holidays. Here are spiritual insights, true-life tales, and captivating legends to intrigue you and your family and bring new luster and depth to your celebration of Jesus’ birth. Discover how • after eighteen centuries of all but ignoring the event, churches began to open the door for believers to commemorate Jesus’ incarnation. • the evergreen tree, once a central theme in the worship practices of pagan cultures, came to represent the everlasting love of God. • the magi’s three gifts—gold, frankincense, and myrrh—are filled with spiritual symbolism. The traditions of Christmas lend beauty, awe, and hope to the holiday, causing people all over the world to anticipate it with joy. The stories in this book will warm your heart as you rediscover the true and eternal significance of Christmas.

TRADITONS AND GENEALOGY

Picture
What clues do your family’s Christmas traditions hold to your genealogy?  Here's how to use traditional Christmas customs around the world in genealogy research.
Christmas is a time for spending with family. It is also an excellent time for re-examining your genealogy research using knowledge of the Christmas traditions of your ancestors. Christmas has been celebrated in one form or another for the past 2,000 years. In that time, many cultures around the world have developed their own Christmas traditions, and they brought these traditions with them to America when they came. The ways your ancestors celebrated Christmas in America, and the way they may still do so today, can tell you a lot about your ancestral origins.

Christmas Programs for Military Families in Need

Picture
Military budgets, which are often already stretched to their limits, do not contain a lot of money for  buying Christmas presents. However, military families are also some of the most deserving people during the holiday season. To help thank military families for the sacrifices they make year-round, many organizations offer programs to make Christmas possible, especially for those with children who deserve to have a joy-filled Christmas.  We often get emails from people asking how they can help military families in need of assistance during the holiday season.  Here are some programs and options available to military families in need
and how people can assist:

During the Pandemic

Most of us are aware of the importance of social distancing during this difficult time in history, and are staying at home to protect ourselves and others. And, while the coronavirus pandemic is causing emotional and economic stress for us all, it is important to find ways to relieve our worry by taking part in activities that lift our mood and help us stay connected (virtually).
That’s why those of us at Family History Daily are so glad to see several genealogy companies and organizations stepping up to provide free access to a wide variety of documents, images, courses and tools to enhance research while we all self-isolate. We’re proud of the family history community for pulling together to support one another and hope these resources will bring a smile to your face.

CENSUS NEWS!

Census Release

Nancy Battick, Special to the Fiddlehead Focus
• November 24, 2021
This year genealogists will have something extra to be thankful for on Thanksgiving Day. In April 2022, the 1950 U.S. Census will be released by the National Archives and Records Administration.
Many genealogists have been waiting for this for a while now as they trace their families through time. The 1950 census was taken post World War II and will begin recording the postwar baby boom. Many of us will show up enumerated for the first time making our debuts so to speak.
There are three parts to the 1950 census, the population census, the Indian Reservation Schedule of Natives living on reservations, and population forms for Canton, Johnston, Midway and Wake Islands. Included in the population census was the continental United States, the territories of Alaska, Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Panama Canal Zone, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Unfortunately, it is unlikely that the release will be indexed.....
