OCTOBER
This month we celebrate the Italian/American Heritage!

We honor the 18 million ancestors of Italian descent who brought their vivacious, fun, and tasty culture to America!
Picture
If you have Italian in you, make sure your family history, traditions, and values stay alive! Tell stories that have been passed down, show old pictures, and (our personal favorite) cook up a big traditional Italian meal! Many Italian-American families have meaningful accounts of hardships, discovery and drive that brought them to where they are today. Take your children, grandchildren, friends, and other family members on a cultural journey. Believe it or not, it’s actually National Pasta Month and National Pizza Month as well… so if you’re looking for the right time in your life to start cutting out carbs,
...now’s not the time.

Benvenuti!
(Welcome!)
Italian-American Heritage Month is an annual designation observed in October. During this time, we celebrate the Italian-American culture, and spread the word about the traditions that come with it. Italian-Americans have made many contributions to the U.S., especially in art, humanities, and sciences. In 1880, Italians began migrating to the U.S. to flee rural poverty in Southern Italy and Sicily, and today, Americans of Italian descent are this nations
fifth-largest ethnic group!

Outgoing President:
Nancy Pavlik

Nancy has been the backbone of our society for more than a few years now. She has always been a voice of calm, and reason. She has paved the way for the new webpage and supported many changes that helped to modernize the society. Nancy has had many other responsibilities outside of the SGS, but felt it was time
to pass the title on. However, she has taken on the role
of one of our three Directors now. A big THANK YOU to
Nancy, for your years of service!

The out-going Director this year is:
Dorothy Netzley

We all at SGS would like to thank Dorothy for her years of selfless service and dedication to the Saginaw Genealogical Society. Dorothy was always a big help to the society, willing to take on extra work when needed, and always with a smile. WE LOVE AND MISS YOU DOROTHY!

HIDING THE PAST
by Nathan D Goodwin
Picture
PETER COLDRICK HAD NO PAST; that was the
conclusion drawn by years of personal and professional research. Then he employed the services of one Morton
Farrier, Forensic Genealogist – a stubborn, determined man
who uses whatever means necessary to uncover the past.
With the Coldrick Case, Morton faces his toughest and most dangerous assignment yet, where all of his investigative and genealogical skills are put to the test. However, others are
also interested in the Coldrick family, people who will stop at nothing, including murder, to hide the past. As Morton begins
to unearth his client’s mysterious past, he is forced to confront his own family’s dark history, a history which he knows little about.

Four Steps to Finding Italian Ancestors
Navigating the ropes of finding your Italian ancestors can be tricky, but those of us who’ve been tracing our Italian roots since the Dark Ages, long before the word online existed, have managed just fine. In fact, I traced my DeBartolo and Vallarelli lines back to the mid-1700s without leaving US shores and without the aid
of a computer. If I can do it, you can, too--
following these four key steps.

ITALY SHAPED AMERICAN CULINARY TRADITION
This month America will once again express its gratitude for the enormous contribution that Italians have provided over the years. There are so many categories in which Italians have made a cultural impact, but most notably among these are: FOOD. the contribution is huge when we consider the culinary tradition of the US.
Think about all the Italian American dishes: spaghetti with meatballs and tomato sauce, pasta Alfredo, Chicken Parmesan, Salads with Italian dressing or Penne with vodka, just to name a few!
Over 5.4 million Italians immigrated to the United States between 1820 and 1992. Today almost 30 million Americans are of Italian descent. So check out some classics and make them a new favorite!

332nd Infantry Infantry

FOREIGN-BORN MEN WHO SERVED AS
AMERICAN SOLDIERS
OF SPECIAL INTEREST, THOUGH, ARE THOSE MEN WHO WERE BORN IN ITALY, immigrated to the U.S. and ably served as American soldiers with the only U.S. military combat unit on the Italian Front in WWI — they had the distinct honor to serve and fight in their homeland alongside their fellow countrymen and the Allies.  When they registered for the draft in June, 1917, most of these Italian-born men who eventually became 332nd Infantry soldiers were not U.S. citizens; some indicated that they had declared their intention or filed the “First Papers” to apply for American citizenship – many may have served their entire tour of duty in the U.S. Army as Italian citizens. A few of them had had prior military service in either Italy or the United States. Click below to read more about them.

Free Resources
During the Pandemic

Most of us are aware of the importance of social distancing during this difficult time in history, and are staying at home to protect ourselves and others. And, while the coronavirus pandemic is causing emotional and economic stress for us all, it is important to find ways to relieve our worry by taking part in activities that lift our mood and help us stay connected (virtually).
That’s why those of us at Family History Daily are so glad to see several genealogy companies and organizations stepping up to provide free access to a wide variety of documents, images, courses and tools to enhance research while we all self-isolate. We’re proud of the family history community for pulling together to support one another and hope these resources will bring a smile to your face.
So come on and get happy!

Dr. Richard E Mudd
Do you recognize this man? He started what became a 50 year COMMENCEMENT. And a "commencement" is
defined as a 'new beginning'. And this is what they did:
The 10 Best ways to a new beginning
  1. Try new things. If you don't try, you will fail.
  2. Don't be afraid to fail. Learn from your errors.
  3. Talk to strangers....they will soon be friends
  4. Be willing to change, change brings insight!
  5. Write a personal mission statement....we did.
  6. Don't try to fit in....genealogists are just different.
  7. Gather opinions together, to cultivate new ideas.
  8. Don't get hung up on perfect, answers will come!

Watch for updates each month on what happened,                   how it all began and who began it all.
