MAY may seem like a little simple name, but its origin is actually fairly complex and interesting. Sit back and read up on this little word’s … big history.
What does May mean?
The fifth month of the Gregorian calendar, May, is defined as “the fifth month of the year, containing 31 days.” Got it. But where did this name come from?
The name for the month of May--
along with the rest of the months of the year—comes from Latin. We can thank the Romans, from emperors to popes, for instituting the modern calendar. May entered English in the 1050s. It developed from the Old English Maius, borrowed directly from the Latin Maius, short for Maius mēnsis, “Maia’s month.”
But who is this Maia?
The Greek goddess Maia was one of the Pleiades, the companions of Artemis, goddess of the hunt. This Maia was the mother of Hermes, the messenger of the Gods. But the Romans had yet another goddess named Maia, who just happened to share a name with the Greek goddess.
The Greek goddess became conflated with the Roman Maia Majesta, a goddess of fertility and spring—appropriate for the growth and increase we see in the month of May.
Want to dig a little deeper? The Greek name Maia comes from a root meaning “mother, nurse, midwife.” The Roman Maia appears to be related to magnus, meaning “great” and source of such words as magnify.
May vs. may
That there is a month, May, and an auxiliary verb, may, is a small linguistic coincidence, not a meaningful overlap. The verb may came from the Old English mæg, ultimately related to a Germanic root meaning “to be able, to be strong, to have power.”
Fun fact: a native Old English name for the fifth month of the year was þrimilce. It literally meant “three milkings,” apparently because it was touted that the cows were so productive in ancient England that they could be milked three times per day.  CLICK BELOW TO LEARN MORE

CINCO DE MAYO IN MEXICO...
Within Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is primarily observed in the state of Puebla, where General Zaragoza’s unlikely victory occurred, although other parts of the country may also take part in the celebration.
Traditions include military parades, recreations of the Battle of Puebla and other festive events. For many Mexicans, however, May 5 is a day like any other: It is not a federal holiday, so offices, banks and stores remain open.

IN MAY WE REMEMBER...
Monday, May 30
Memorial Day 2022 in United States
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for mourning the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States armed forces. It is observed on the last Monday of May. It was formerly observed on May 30 from 1868 to 1970.

As Memorial Day approaches, red poppies begin to make their annual appearance, especially pinned to people's lapels, tote bags or even hats. These colorful flowers, often made of fabric or crepe paper honor and memorialize fallen soldiers, as well as serving as a fundraiser to support our nation's war veterans. The red poppy officially became the national emblem of remembrance in 1920 – but the resilient little flower's roots run deep, all the way back to the battlefields of World War I, where they grew in the unlikeliest of places.

HONOR THE FALLEN SOLDIERS

“In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

The Forbidden Schoolhouse: The True and Dramatic Story of Prudence Crandall and Her Students
Picture
“A captivating read.” --Kirkus Reviews
They threw rocks at the school windows. Villagers refused to sell Miss Crandall groceries or let her students attend the town church. Her schoolhouse was mysteriously set on fire. The town authorities dragged her to jail and put her on trial for breaking the law.   Her crime? Trying to teach African American girls geography, history, reading, philosophy, and chemistry.   Exciting and eye-opening, this account of the heroine of Canterbury, Connecticut, and her elegant white schoolhouse at the center of town will give readers a glimpse of what it is like to try to change the world when few agree with you.

GOOD THINGS TO KNOW

WE HAD EVERYTHING BUT MONEY
By Deb Mulvey

Picture
So many textbooks are a dry series of graphs and charts with very little of interest to the everyday reader. This book, while not a textbook per se, teaches in a lively "You Are There" kind of way. The stories in this book, as well as others in this series, are taken from people who actually lived during these trying times. This is the way history and basic social studies should be taught; children (and adults!) would learn ten times as much and have fun doing it! The vintage photos that are scattered through the book are a very good collection, gleaned from the people whose stories are shared as well as old stock photos. This sort of book is one to be treasured, but one that rarely comes along. Reiman Publications has a series of these books on similar topics (the home front during WWII, motoring memories, women being the backbone of the family, etc.) Buy them ALL and keep them close to home. They will enrich your lives immeasurably!

WHAT IS MOTHRS DAY?
Not a public holiday, but a legal national holiday observed on the second Sunday in May in the United States.
Mother's Day is celebrated across the world, in more than 50 countries, though not all countries celebrate it on the same day.  Countries that celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May include Australia, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Switzerland, Turkey and Belgium. In Mexico and many parts of Latin America, Mother's Day is celebrated on May 10th of each year. In Thailand, it is celebrated on August 12th, the birthday of the current Queen.

1962 : The first Kmart department store opens in Garden City, Michigan selling a range of Clothes, shoes, housewares, bedding, furniture, jewelry, beauty products, and electronics. Kmart went through a period of rapid expansion up to the early eighties but from the late 80's due to lack of investment in technology and increased competition from the growing Walmart and Target stores and change in customer tastes sales continued to decline. In 2005 following sales decline Kmart merged with Sears, Roebuck and Company.

CENSUS NEWS!

Census Release

Nancy Battick, Special to the Fiddlehead Focus
This year genealogists will have something extra to be thankful for! In April 2022, the 1950 U.S. Census will be released by the National Archives and Records Administration!!! HURRAY!
Many genealogists have been waiting for this for a while now as they trace their families through time. The 1950 census was taken post World War II and will begin recording the postwar baby boom. Many of us will show up enumerated for the first time making our debuts so to speak.
There are three parts to the 1950 census, the population census, the Indian Reservation Schedule of Natives living on reservations, and population forms for Canton, Johnston, Midway and Wake Islands. Included in the population census was the continental United States, the territories of Alaska, Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Panama Canal Zone, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. BUT THERE IS A PROBLEM
Unfortunately, it is unlikely that the release will be indexed.....
