Everything You Should Know About June!
By Catherine Boeckmann May 8, 2024 The month of June brings beauty in all forms, from flowers to sunlight. See 8 events to mark on your calendar—plus gardening tips, astronomy highlights, seasonal recipes, folklore, and more! The Month of June Juno is the ancient Roman goddess of marriage and childbirth. And the month of June is still a popular month for weddings today! As a natural extension of marriage, Juno was also the goddess of childbirth. Another interpretation of the origins of “June” says that the name came from the Latin juvenis, “young people,” who were celebrated at this time. Juno, in Roman religion, was the chief goddess and female counterpart of Jupiter, similar to the relationship between the Greek Hera and Zeus. Perhaps not surprisingly, given her role of protector of women and children, this powerful queen of the gods was also considered the fierce protector and special counselor of the state and a guardian angel warning those in times of danger. |

WAR STORIES TO WARM YOUR HEARTNational Donut Day or National Doughnut Day, celebrated in the United States and in some other countries, is on the first Friday of June of each year, succeeding the doughnut event created by The Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938 to honor those of their members who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I The holiday celebrates the doughnut. Many American doughnut stores still offer free doughnuts on the occasion.
National Donut Day started in 1938 as a fundraiser for Chicago's The Salvation Army. Their goal was to help those in need during the Great Depression, and to honor the Salvation Army "Lassies" of World War I, girls who served doughnuts to soldiers.
About 250 Salvation Army volunteers went to France. Because of the difficulties of providing freshly baked goods from huts established in abandoned buildings near to the front lines, the two Salvation Army volunteers (Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance) came up with the idea of providing doughnuts. These are reported to have been an "instant hit", and "soon many soldiers were visiting the Salvation Army huts". Margaret Sheldon wrote of one busy day: "Today I made 22 pies, 300 doughnuts, 700 cups of coffee." Soon, the women who did this work became known by the servicemen as "Doughnut Girls". 'MOMS' IN WWI
Soon after the entrance of the United States into World War I in 1917, the Salvation Army sent a fact-finding mission to France. The mission concluded that the needs of American enlisted men could be met by canteens/social centers termed "huts" that could serve baked goods, provide writing supplies and stamps, and provide a clothes-mending service. Typically, six staff members per hut would include four female volunteers who could "mother" the boys. These huts were established by the Salvation Army in the United States near army training centers. A misconception has taken hold that the provision of doughnuts to enlisted men in World War I is the origin of the term "doughboy" to describe U.S. infantry. However, the term was in use as early as the Mexican–American War of 1846–47. In the Second World War, Red Cross Volunteers also distributed doughnuts, and it became routine to refer to the Red Cross girls as 'Doughnut Dollies' as well. In Chicago and other cities, National Donut Day is still a fundraiser for the Salvation Army. In 2017, the organization joined with Russ's Market, Super Saver, La Mar's Donuts, Hurts Donut and Krispy Kreme in Lincoln, Nebraska, and Tempe, Arizona, to raise funds on National Donut Day. There are three other doughnut holidays, the origins of which are obscure. National Jelly-Filled Doughnut Day is recognized as June 8 (occasionally as June 9). National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day is celebrated on September 14 although there is also a National Boston Cream Pie Day observed October 23. Buy a Doughnut Day occurs on October 30. DOWN SOUTH In the state of South Australia, Doughnut Day (first Friday of June) is honoured with a partnership between Krispy Kreme and The Salvation Army. It includes a celebrity doughnut decorating competition, doughnut giveaways, and the Red Shield Hope Doughnut whose profits go to supporting the Salvation Army's work in Australia. In Australia in 2020, the term 'doughnut day' has become a reference to the shape being a 'zero', representing a day free of new coronavirus cases. It stemmed from 26 October 2020 when a Melbourne supermarket had sold out of doughnuts, taken to be a symbol of hope and recovery during a long period of lockdown. OOPS! THIS ISNT THE MONTH FOR THEIR BIRTHDAY!!! WHAT IS GOING ON HERE???
The birthday of the United States Marine Corps (November 10), was once referred to as National Donut Day, in a successful RUSE was done by American prisoners of war at Son Tay prison camp to trick the North Vietnamese into giving out donuts early in honor of the occasion. A second National Donut Day is also celebrated on November 5, which is speculated to have originated from this event. (Oh, those tricky Marines!) Want to try your hand at making the donuts that started it all?
Below, you’ll find our century-old recipe so you can bake and share these sweet treats with whomever needs them most. SALVATION ARMY WWI DONUT INGREDIENTS Yield: 60 donuts 2 large eggs 5 cups flour 2 cup sugar 5 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 tablespoon salt 1 3/4 cup milk 1 tub lard (this can be substituted with butter or vegetable oil) DIRECTIONS Combine all ingredients (except for oil) to make dough. Thoroughly knead dough, roll smooth, and cut into rings that are less than 1/4 inch thick. (When finding items to cut out donut circles, be creative! Salvation Army Donut Lassies used whatever they could find, from baking powder cans to coffee percolator tubes.) Drop the rings into the HOT oil, making sure the oil is hot enough to brown the donuts gradually. Turn the donuts slowly several times. When browned, remove donuts and allow excess oil to drip off. Dust with powdered sugar. Let cool and ...enjoy! WAR STORIES ACROSS THE YEARSDid you know what event sparked WW1?
check it out... (I KNOW I DIDN'T KNOW!) A HISTORY LESSONBy Oleksandra Mamchii
published: January 2, 2024 An important moment in modern history, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary on June 28, 1914, at Sarajevo, Bosnia, greatly contributed to the outbreak of World War I. The Black Hand, a gang of Bosnian Serb nationalists, carried out this killing, which set off a series of events that ultimately resulted in the commencement of the First globe War and altered the political landscape of Europe and the whole globe.
History Understanding the political context of Europe in the early 20th century is crucial to comprehending the importance of Franz Ferdinand’s murder. The Triple Alliance, which comprised Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy, and the Triple Entente, which included France, Russia, and the United Kingdom, were the two principal alliance systems in Europe. These coalitions were built to balance one another’s influence and protect each party’s interest. The successor to the Austro-Hungarian throne, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, was divisive throughout the kingdom. The Union with Sophie Chotek, a noblewoman from the Czech Republic, was seen as morganatic because she was not of equal royal status, and as a result, their offspring were not eligible to succeed to the throne. This increased strife among the elite and among the imperial family. Nationalism was also on the increase, and the empire itself was a complicated patchwork of ethnic groupings. Serb nationalist groups in particular constituted a serious danger to the territorial integrity of Austria-Hungary. Life of Archduke Franz Ferdinand Franz Ferdinand was the oldest child and brother of the emperor Franz Joseph, the archduke Charles Louis. After his father, who passed away in 1896, Franz Ferdinand became the next in line to the Austro-Hungarian throne following the death of the heir apparent, Archduke Rudolf, in 1889. Due to Franz Ferdinand’s poor health in the 1890s, Otto, his younger brother, was seen to have a better chance of succeeding, which greatly enraged Franz Ferdinand. His ambition to wed the lady-in-waiting Sophie, countess of Chotek, led to a bitter feud between him and the emperor and the court. The Morganatic marriage was only permitted in 1900 when the monarch renounced his claim to the throne on behalf of his future offspring. He attempted to mend fences between Austria and Russia without jeopardizing the alliance with Germany. At home, he considered political changes that would have improved the crown’s position while weakening the Magyars’ status in comparison to other nations in Hungary. His strategies were founded on the understanding that any patriotic measures taken by a portion of the populace would jeopardize the expansive Habsburg kingdom. His constant pressure on Franz Joseph, who in his final years left matters to take care of themselves but fiercely despised any interference with his prerogative, strained their relationship. Franz was appointed inspector general of the army in 1913 after gaining more clout in military affairs starting in 1906. Sophie and Franz Ferdinand’s Marriage Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, was the spouse of Austria-Hungarian archduke Franz Ferdinand. The fact that Sophie, whose full name was Countess Sophie Chotek von Chotkova und Wognin, did not hold the same royal status as Franz Ferdinand generated significant debate within the Austro-Hungarian imperial court. The imperial family did not view Sophie and Franz Ferdinand’s marriage as being equal since it was deemed morganatic. (Morganatic means a marriage of unequals in class. A person of high social rank, particularly a member of the nobility, marries someone of lower rank, with the stipulation that the spouse won't have any claim to the inheritance or property of the higher-ranking spouse.) As a result, their offspring were not included in the succession process for the Austro-Hungarian crown. Because the marriage was viewed as going against established royal procedure, this led to conflicts among the Habsburg family. But Franz Ferdinand and Sophie maintained a passionate and committed relationship despite the difficulties they encountered. Planning and Plotting of the Assassination The Black Hand, a clandestine organization with connections to Serbian nationalist organizations, was out to end Austro-Hungarian rule in Bosnia and Herzegovina and create a unified Serb state. Archduke Franz Ferdinand was scheduled to visit Sarajevo on June 28, 1914 and their goal was to murder him. There were other people in the gang, including Danilo Ilic, Gavrilo Princip, and Nedeljko Cabrinovic. Though the degree of the Serbian government’s involvement is still up for historical discussion, they were supported by friendly Serbian military and political personnel. Assassination Attempt Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie arrived at Sarajevo on June 28, 1914, to examine the troops stationed there, which proved to be a disastrous day. The Battle of Kosovo Anniversary, an important occasion for Serb nationalists, fell on the same week as the visit. Gavrilo Princip and Nedeljko Cabrinovic attempted to kill Franz Ferdinand when the royal couple was traveling in a motorcade through the streets of Sarajevo but they were unsuccessful. The Archduke and his wife made the deadly decision to visit the victims of the first assassination at the hospital later that day after a sequence of incidents. A sequence of misunderstandings and blunders led to them taking a different route, where they eventually encountered Gavrilo Princip. Princip recognized the royal couple and went up to their car after having previously given up on seeing the Archduke. He fired two rounds, which hit Sophie and Franz Ferdinand. Archduke passed away within minutes and shortly after that, his wife also passed away from her wounds. Franz' Last Ride Franz Ferdinand was a fanatical car collector, which is an intriguing detail about him. Franz Ferdinand was a passionate auto enthusiast in the early 20th century, when cars were becoming more and more popular. He possessed an impressive collection of vehicles, which comprised diverse makes and models. On the day of his murder in Sarajevo, he was driving one of the most well-known vehicles in his collection, a Graf & Stift double phaeton vehicle. In an ironic turn of events, it turned out that this car was the one that Gavrilo Princip utilized to murder him and his wife, Sophie, leading to the start of World War I. Franz Ferdinand had a military purpose in mind when he developed an interest in cars that went beyond a simple pastime. He supported the modernisation of the Austro-Hungarian army’s transportation and logistics because he saw the possibilities for using vehicles instead of animals in the military. His interest in automotive technology was a reflection of the era in which he lived and the significance of emerging technologies in the buildup to the First World War. Austria-Hungary sought the advice of imperial Germany, a far more powerful partner in the Dual Alliance, to see if Germany would approve retaliatory action against Serbia in response to this tragedy. Due to these contacts, the German officials gave the Austro-Hungarian officials what was later referred to as a “blank check” on July 5 and 6, 1914, authorizing them to act against Serbia with German assistance. As a supporter of the Austro-Hungarian effort, Germany possessed enormous influence. They created an ultimatum directed at the Serbian government, which was transmitted to Serbia on July 23, 1914, following a tactical pause. The Serbs had 48 hours to react to the ultimatum before it expired, but it was intended to be unworkable. That included calls for Austrian investigations inside of Serbia, which would have nullified Serbia’s sovereignty. Even if they had earlier shown sympathy for what they saw to be Austria-Hungary’s legitimate objections, many European diplomats were astonished by the tone of this ultimatum. Russian Economic and Military Help Serbia turned to its friend and staunch Slavic benefactor, the Russian Empire. Russia was a powerful empire with enormous economic and military potential. After speaking with the Russians, who had convinced Serbia that they would support them as well, on July 25, Serbia agreed to the majority of the ultimatum while also preparing its military. Russia readied for mobilization while Serbia made preparations for war. The actions taken on July 26 by the British foreign secretary, Edward Grey, are reminiscent of the Concert of Europe era. In order to resolve the problem, he called for a summit. According to the Concert of Europe tradition, in times of crisis, the heads of state would convene a congress or conference. But Grey was overlooked as things progressed. After receiving what Austria-Hungary perceived as an inadequate telegraph response to their ultimatum, it declared war on Serbia on July 28. The uproar went beyond only being a local issue. Tsar Nicholas of the Russian Empire issued an order for full mobilization on July 30. As a result, on July 31, Germany sent Russia a warning that it had two options: halt mobilizing or prepare for war with Germany. It also said that there was a threat of war and requested French neutrality. A Covert Plan Germany declared war on Russia when its deadline for a response to its ultimatum against Moscow passed on August 1. Germany briefly believed that it could still be able to win the British government’s neutrality, but war preparations nonetheless continued. The Secret Schlieffen Plan, which had been developed long before as a highly thorough mobilization plan, was the main German war strategy. It was developed in 1905 with the intention of addressing the prospect of war: To take on this task by launching an immediate, lightning-quick onslaught via neutral Belgium against France in the west. German generals believed that despite the clear breach of international law, this action was essential. Germany sent an ultimatum to neutral Belgium requesting that its forces be let to pass through. That ultimatum has unequivocally revealed the British role. The government came to the conclusion that Britain had to join the conflict. The possibility of another Great Power conquering Belgium—which lies just over the English Channel and would serve as a prime staging area for an invasion of the British Isles had become a strategic consideration. Belgium simply refused the German ultimatum on August 3, and Germany then declared war on France and invaded Belgium. Sir Edward Grey of Britain sent a demand to Germany on the same day, and that deadline expired at night on August 4th. Britain had joined the conflict. The Implications The murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand sparked a series of incidents that eventually brought on the outbreak of World War I: 1) Austria-Hungary’s Appeal Austria-Hungary issued an ultimatum with stringent conditions, accusing Serbia for the murder on July 23, 1914. Austria-Hungary found Serbia’s partial acceptance of the ultimatum insufficient, and on July 28 declared war as a result. 2) European Alliance The alliance arrangements in Europe swiftly came into operation. Due to its connections to Serbia, Russia started to prepare its military, which led Germany to declare war on Russia on August 1st, 1914. Germany then invaded Belgium and declared war on France, an ally of Russia, entangling the UK in the battle. 3) The Global Struggle What started out as a regional struggle quickly grew into a worldwide conflict as additional countries became involved. There were new alliances, pitting the Allies including France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and subsequently, the United States against the Central Powers such as Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire. 4) Bloodbath World War I, which lasted from 1914 to 1918 and claimed an estimated 16 million lives, was characterized by trench warfare, gas assaults, and brutal battles. 5) The Treaty The Treaty of Versailles, which placed severe reparations and territory losses on Germany, put an end to the war in 1919. The strict conditions of the pact would provide the groundwork for upcoming wars, especially World War II. Conclusion The seeming isolated killing of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary in Sarajevo had far-reaching effects that altered the course of history. It sparked the start of World War I, a terrible battle that devastated Europe and ushered in a new age of world politics. The murder serves as a sobering reminder of how intertwined nations are and how significant an influence of seemingly little events may have on the entire world. ![]()

TICKLE YOUR FUNNY BONEMONTH BY MONTH:WHAT DAYS ARE YOUR FAVORITES? June, the 6th month of the year, radiates with sunshine and positive outlooks. It is the undisputed month for wedding ceremonies. Perhaps this is because June gets its name from a Roman Goddess, Juno. She is not only the wife of Jupiter but she watches over marriages. This connection did not occur until around the 17th century. Juno’s counterpart in Greece was Hera who literally oversees the city of Rome proper, while also governing childbirth and blessing marriages.
As an odd aside, Romans felt that marriage should take place after mid-June for best success. Ovid shared his account of meeting the High Priestess of Jupiter in order to set an auspicious date for his daughter’s nuptials. Her reply was to wait until after June 15th. Throughout the month of June you can view the Arietids Meteor Shower with best viewing on June 7. The Arietids are a strong meteor shower that lasts from May 22 to July 2 each year, and peaks on June 7. The Arietids, along with the Zeta Perseids, are the most intense daylight meteor showers of the year. There is also the Beta Taurids beginning on June 5 and lasting well into July and the June Bootids that has a short moment on the night’s sky center stage from June 26 until July 2nd. We can perhaps best understand the energies of June by looking to the Goddess for which this month was named. Juno appears warlike in various artistic renderings, implying she is ready and able to forcibly protect those things about which she governs. Juno’s name means 'rejuvenate'. This designation sometimes tied her to the new to waxing moon cycle. Her name also means “to aid”. Overall Juno’s attributes include energy, youthfulness and creative power. In a amusing aside, Juno is said to have been a bit of a nag to her husband, scolding him like a child. (Maybe that is what led to all his "girlfriends? Hmmmm.) There were various epithets for Juno, each of which provide us with insights into this Goddesses’ diversity. Three epithets stand out. First is Juno Sospita who protects those awaiting childbirth. Second is Juno Lucina (meaning light). When laboring women came to pray at her temples they untied any knot in their garments to speed delivery. Finally we have Juno Moneta who safeguards Rome’s coffers. It was in her temple that Roman coins were minted for more than four centuries. In looking at this Goddess, we can see that the month of June is positive for improving relationships (not only by weddings but also through vow renewals etc.). For those wishing to conceive, now is the time to give it the old college try! Another feature that shapes June is the celebration of Litha, the Summer Solstice taking place around June 20th. This is a festival replete with sexual symbolism and burning passions. Just as the sun warms, so do human hearts! Litha is the longest day of the year. In Pagan mythology, this is when the Oak King gives over his rein to his brother, the Holly King who will oversee the descent of the sun until Yule. Fires were a common way of celebrating this event. The ashes from herbs tossed into Litha fires bless animals, fields and home. This is the best time of the year for harvesting magical herbs so they have full potency. Lithia, means SUMMER SOLSTICE. June begins in the Zodiac sign of Gemini (the twins) which remains in play until the 22nd. June’s Gemini energy is playful, silly, harmonious and very active. People tend to be “up and going” during the Gemini cycle. Use your magic for tapping into Gemini’s creativity, versatility, artistic aptitude and mental prowess. If you are a Leo or Aries you will find this time of the month very welcoming. A neat factoid: NASA’s Project Gemini was named thus because the spacecraft only held two astronauts. The end of the month belongs to Cancer (the Crab). Cancer resonates with the Water element, energy focused on family, foundations, community, emotional clarity and hearth and home. That makes this period in June ideal for family gatherings for special events or just for a jaunt into the woods for a picnic. There are any number of Holidays you can celebrate on any day in June. June is home to the Great Outdoors Month, National Smile Month (UK), and PTSD Awareness month. For celebrations that change dates slightly there is the First Friday in June for Bahamas’ Labor Day, and the First Sunday in June – Childrens’ Day! The First Wednesday – Global Running Day and the third week in June is Bicycle Week in the UK and Ireland. There is also Flip Flop day on the third Friday, Father’s Day is on the third Sunday!! Take your Dog to work Day on the Friday following the third Sunday and Log Cabin Day in Michigan on the last Sunday. Moving on to fixed observances... June 1 - is the Global Day of Parents and World Milk Day. June 3 offers National Egg and Chocolate Macaroon Days. June 5 there’s National Moonshine Day June 8 World Brain Tumor Day June 11 National Corn on the Cob June 14 National Flag Day!
